Manual Shaft & Lever Window Openers

EBSA New Zealand supplies manual shaft and lever window opening systems for projects where reliable manual control, grouped sash operation, and a robust architectural finish are required. These systems are well suited to high-level windows and multi-sash arrangements where simple hand operation is not practical, but full electrical automation is not required.

Manual shaft and lever systems are an effective solution for operating multiple sashes from a single winder position. They are commonly used where architects, joiners, and builders want a durable manual opening system that can be configured to suit the window layout and mounting conditions. Pricing and takeoff are typically considered by sash set, such as sets of one, two, three, four, five, or six sashes, which reflects how the system is practically designed and quoted.

These systems are especially useful where a central, left-hand, or right-hand winder location is needed to suit the façade and internal layout. For larger grouped openings, placing the winder centrally can help distribute load more evenly across the assembly. Tube length is an important design consideration, with practical layouts generally staying within an effective span of about 5 to 5.5 metres, and around 6 metres as the upper limit before sets may need to be split.

EBSA’s approach focuses on more than just supplying components. Correct site measure, support for fixing locations, and allowance for wall construction are all critical to a successful installation. Internal reinforcement, packers, and solid mounting points may be required to ensure the gearbox and support hardware are fixed properly and perform reliably over time.

Manual shaft and lever systems can also be the preferred choice where a visible mechanical system suits the architectural language of the project. Compared with some alternative manual systems, the shaft and lever arrangement offers a distinct powder-coated, engineered appearance that some designers intentionally prefer.

Key benefits

  • Manual operation for high-level and difficult-to-reach windows
  • Suitable for grouped multi-sash arrangements
  • Winder position can often be configured left, right, or central
  • Robust mechanical solution with powder-coated architectural finish
  • Ideal where electrical automation is not required
  • Supported by EBSA with project-specific layout and application guidance

Best suited to: grouped operable sashes, high-level windows, education and commercial projects, and applications where a strong visual mechanical solution is acceptable or preferred. Based on your current NZ discussions, shaft and lever is not always suitable where reveals are very deep or where other elements such as drop-down blinds conflict with the system geometry.
