Grouped window control

The GVL 8408-M provides five ventilation groups as standard. Each group can be used to control a defined set of windows, louvres or roof openings.

An optional GME 83 group module can be fitted where a sixth independently controlled ventilation group is required.

The total connected drive load across all groups must remain within the panel’s 8 A output capacity.

Control options

The GVL 8408-M can receive control commands from suitable:

  • open and close ventilation switches;
  • external control contacts;
  • room temperature controls;
  • wind sensors;
  • rain sensors; and
  • compatible natural ventilation accessories.

The required control devices, group arrangement and operating sequence should be established before field wiring is completed.

Weather protection

A compatible wind and rain sensor can be connected so that the controller commands the connected openings to close when adverse weather is detected, provided mains power remains available.

Weather-control requirements should consider the type, size and location of the openings, the effect of wind on the façade and whether different groups require separate operating behaviour.

Drive capacity and compatibility

Control-panel selection must account for:

  • the selected drive models;
  • the rated and starting current of each drive;
  • the number of drives connected to each group;
  • the total connected load across the panel;
  • cable length and voltage drop;
  • the required opening sequence;
  • the number of independently controlled groups; and
  • any simultaneous operating requirements.

Drive and bracket compatibility should be confirmed before window fabrication or installation.

Typical system arrangement

Application schematic for the GVL 8408-M natural ventilation control panel

Local operation:

Wall switches → GVL 8408-M → selected window groups open or close

Automatic ventilation:

Room temperature control → GVL 8408-M → selected groups operate automatically

External control:

External control signal → GVL 8408-M → selected groups open or close

Weather protection:

Wind/rain sensor → GVL 8408-M → connected groups close while mains power remains available

Mains power failure

The GVL 8408-M does not include standby batteries.

If the connected windows, louvres or roof openings are open when the 230 V AC mains supply fails, they will remain in their existing position because the controller no longer has power to operate the drives.

Connected wind, rain and temperature controls also cannot operate the openings while the panel has no operating power.

Where automatic close on loss of mains power is required, use a battery-backed D+H RZN or CPS-M control panel. The panel remains powered from its standby batteries and commands the connected openings to close.

Natural ventilation only

The GVL 8408-M is intended for normal natural ventilation and automated window operation.

It must not be used as a substitute for a smoke and natural ventilation control panel where openings must respond to a fire alarm, perform a smoke-control function or remain available from standby batteries during a mains failure.

Housing selection

The GVL 8408-M is supplied for installation within a suitable enclosure.

The GEH-KST housing is available separately and provides a plastic enclosure with a sheet-metal door. A suitable alternative enclosure may be used where it is compatible with the panel, installation environment, access and electrical requirements.

The final enclosure arrangement should be confirmed before installation.

Installation and coordination

The control panel should be installed in an accessible location suitable for electrical connection, testing, commissioning and future maintenance.

The project team should confirm:

  • panel and enclosure location;
  • 230 V AC supply;
  • ventilation-group arrangement;
  • drive and field-device cabling;
  • wall-switch locations;
  • room temperature control requirements;
  • wind and rain sensor locations;
  • external control interfaces;
  • connected drive load by group;
  • total panel load;
  • voltage drop;
  • termination responsibilities; and
  • commissioning requirements.

Information for builders and electrical contractors

  • Allow for the required mains supply to the control panel.
  • Allow for a suitable panel enclosure.
  • Allow cabling between the panel, switches, sensors, controls and connected drives.
  • Confirm the final panel and enclosure location before field cabling is completed.
  • Confirm the required ventilation groups and control locations before wiring.
  • Provide access for testing, commissioning and future maintenance.
  • Confirm termination and commissioning responsibilities before installation.

Information for aluminium joiners

  • Confirm drive compatibility before window fabrication.
  • Allow suitable fixing points for the selected drives and brackets.
  • Provide concealed cable pathways within the framing where practical.
  • Confirm the required drive colour and cable-tail length.
  • Coordinate window hardware, opening geometry and actuator requirements with EBSA.
  • Confirm how the windows will be divided into operating groups.

Compatible equipment

The GVL 8408-M can be used with suitable:

  • D+H 24 V DC window drives;
  • GEH-KST or compatible control-panel housing;
  • GME 83 group module;
  • open and close ventilation switches;
  • external control contacts;
  • room temperature controls;
  • wind and rain sensors;
  • mounting brackets;
  • field cabling; and
  • natural ventilation accessories.

Compatibility must be confirmed against the selected drives, connected load, group arrangement and required control functions.

When to consider another control panel

Consider a different control-panel arrangement where the project requires:

  • more than six independently controlled ventilation groups;
  • greater than 8 A total drive current;
  • smoke ventilation or fire-alarm operation;
  • battery-backed operation;
  • automatic close on loss of mains power;
  • complex BMS or mechanical-services integration;
  • advanced operating sequences; or
  • project-specific control logic.

An RZN panel may be suitable for battery-backed smoke and natural ventilation control. CPS-M is used for larger, modular or project-specific control systems.
