FRA and VLD Window Locking Drives

D+H FRA 11-BSY+, VLD 51/038-BSY+ and VLD-0600-038-1-BSY+ drives provide powered operation of compatible multipoint window locking systems. Through D+H BSY+ communication, the locking drives synchronise with compatible D+H chain drives so the window unlocks before opening and does not relock until the chain drive confirms that the sash is fully closed.

Overview

D+H window locking drives provide powered operation of compatible multipoint window locking systems.

The locking drive works in sequence with the primary D+H window actuator. Before the window opens, the locking drive releases the multipoint locking hardware. The connected chain drive then opens the sash. During closing, the locking drive waits until the chain drive confirms that the sash is fully closed before re-engaging the multipoint lock.

The range includes:

  • FRA 11-BSY+ rotary window locking drive.
  • VLD 51/038-BSY+ linear window locking drive.
  • VLD-0600-038-1-BSY+ linear window locking drive.

The FRA and VLD models use different mechanical arrangements and are not interchangeable without reviewing the window profiles, multipoint locking hardware, primary opening drive and control sequence.

Multipoint window locking

FRA and VLD locking drives are primarily used to automate compatible multipoint window locking systems.

A multipoint system uses a gearbox, connecting rods or sliding locking bar to operate several locking points around the sash perimeter. Depending on the window hardware, these may include locking cams, rollers, bolts, shoot bolts or other locking elements.

Powered multipoint locking can assist with:

  • Automatic release of all locking points before the window opens.
  • Consistent engagement of several locking points after closing.
  • Compression of the sash against compatible perimeter seals.
  • Secure closure of larger or heavier automated windows.
  • Operation of concealed window hardware.
  • Coordinated locking within natural ventilation and smoke control systems.

The complete window must be designed and adjusted so the profiles, hinges, seals, gearbox, locking points, opening actuator and locking drive operate together correctly.

BSY+ synchronisation with D+H chain drives

The FRA 11-BSY+ and VLD BSY+ locking drives communicate with compatible D+H chain drives through the D+H BSY+ system.

This communication provides the required operating sequence:

  1. An open command is issued to the window system.
  2. The locking drive releases the multipoint locking system.
  3. The locking drive confirms that the window is unlocked.
  4. The D+H chain drive is then permitted to open the sash.
  5. When a close command is issued, the chain drive closes the sash first.
  6. The locking drive waits for confirmation from the chain drive that the window is fully closed.
  7. Only after receiving the fully closed confirmation does the locking drive engage the multipoint locking system.

This prevents the chain drive from attempting to open a locked window and prevents the multipoint locking hardware from engaging before the sash has reached its fully closed position.

Depending on the connected actuator, the required closed-position or sequence signal may be provided through BSY+ or an applicable D+H position-feedback option.

FRA 11-BSY+ rotary locking drive

The FRA 11-BSY+ is a rotary locking drive designed to operate compatible multipoint window hardware through an internal gearbox.

It is installed in place of the conventional window handle and connects to the gearbox through a 7 mm square shaft.

During an open command, the FRA 11-BSY+ rotates the gearbox to release the multipoint locking points before enabling the connected D+H opening drive. During closing, it waits for confirmation that the sash is fully closed before rotating the gearbox back to the locked position.

The FRA 11-BSY+ includes a position indicator, LED status indication and a manual emergency-release arrangement.

FRA 11-BSY+ application requirements

The FRA 11-BSY+ requires a compatible multipoint-lock gearbox and a 43 mm mounting distance.

Before selection, the following should be confirmed:

  • The internal multipoint-lock gearbox is compatible with the FRA drive.
  • The locking hardware operates freely through its complete travel.
  • The sash closes evenly against the frame.
  • The window is correctly aligned.
  • The 7 mm square shaft suits the installed gearbox.
  • The required 90° or 180° rotation is correctly configured.
  • The connected D+H opening drive provides the required closed-position confirmation.
  • The unlock-open-close-lock sequence is correctly programmed and tested.

Excessive resistance within the gearbox, locking rods, locking points or sash can cause overload faults and unreliable operation.

VLD linear locking drives

The VLD models are compact linear drives for operating compatible multipoint sliding-lock hardware.

They may be integrated into suitable window profiles or mounted on the frame using the applicable fitting arrangement.

During opening, the VLD moves the locking bar to release the multipoint locking points before the connected BSY+ chain drive begins to open. During closing, the VLD waits until the chain drive confirms that the sash is fully closed before moving the locking bar back into the locked position.

Up to six compatible VLD BSY+ locking drives may be synchronised on one window, subject to the complete window and control-system design.

The VLD-0600-038-1-BSY+ provides up to 600 N in both the locking and unlocking directions and has a stated service life of more than 20,000 double strokes.

VLD 51 and VLD-0600 selection

The VLD 51/038-BSY+ and VLD-0600-038-1-BSY+ share the same compact housing dimensions but differ in locking force, service life and product configuration.

Selection should consider:

  • Required locking and unlocking force.
  • Required 19 mm or 38 mm movement.
  • Multipoint locking-bar arrangement.
  • Profile dimensions and available installation space.
  • Integrated or surface-mounted installation.

The FRA and VLD locking drives incorporate D+H BSY+ electronics for coordinated operation with compatible D+H chain drives and other opening actuators.

Integrated and surface-mounted VLD installation

VLD drives may be integrated into compatible window profiles or mounted on the outer frame.

The applicable fitting arrangement must be selected to suit the window construction:

  • PI-VLD tappet-driver arrangement.
  • RE-VLD frame-fitting arrangement.

Bracket and fitting sets are selected separately.

VLD drives are supplied without a connection cable. The correct pre-assembled cable and connector must be selected for the applicable 6-pin or 12-pin drive version.

VLD replacement compatibility

Different VLD 51 product revisions should not be mixed within the same parallel drive arrangement.

Where paired drives are installed, the product numbers and versions should be reviewed before replacing one unit. In some installations, the complete drive pair may require replacement.

Manual emergency unlocking

The FRA 11-BSY+ can be released from its base plate and operated similarly to a conventional window handle during a power failure.

The VLD models can also be manually unlocked where the required access point has been incorporated into the window profile.

Emergency-release access should be considered during the window and profile design.
