Compact smoke and natural ventilation control panel

The D+H RZN 4503-T is a compact smoke and natural ventilation control panel developed particularly for stairwells and smaller smoke ventilation systems.

It provides 24 V DC output with up to 3 A total actuator capacity, one monitored fire line and one ventilation group within a compact aluminium enclosure.

The front of the panel incorporates smoke-vent and natural ventilation controls, allowing the panel to provide local operation without requiring a separate ventilation switch for basic use.

Smoke-control operation

The RZN 4503-T receives a fire or smoke-control signal through its monitored fire line.

When an alarm signal is received, the panel gives priority to the fire-mode sequence and commands the connected windows, louvres or roof openings to move to their required smoke-control position.

Switchable safety functions include fault-equals-alarm operation and smoke-control retriggering. These functions are selected to suit the approved project sequence.

Integrated local controls

The front of the RZN 4503-T incorporates smoke-vent and natural ventilation operating controls.

This compact arrangement is particularly useful in stairwells and smaller systems where local operation and indication are required at the panel position.

Additional compatible smoke-vent operating panels may be connected where remote manual control is required.

Natural ventilation operation

The panel can operate connected openings for normal day-to-day ventilation while retaining fire-mode priority.

Compatible natural ventilation controls may include:

  • the integrated ventilation buttons;
  • compatible remote ventilation switches;
  • a rain sensor;
  • a wind and rain sensor;
  • low-level external control contacts; and
  • other approved project interfaces.

Weather-sensor connection

A compatible rain sensor or wind and rain sensor can be connected directly to the RZN 4503-T without an additional weather interface module.

During normal ventilation operation, the weather signal can command connected openings to close when rain or excessive wind is detected.

Fire-mode commands retain priority over normal weather-related ventilation control.

Programmable signalling contacts

The RZN 4503-T provides two freely programmable volt-free signalling contacts.

These contacts may be configured for defined project functions such as status, alarm or fault indication, subject to the selected panel configuration and interface requirements.

They can support low-level coordination with a BMS or other compatible building system where suitable volt-free contacts are required.

Standby batteries and mains power failure

The RZN 4503-T is supplied with monitored standby battery capacity to maintain control-system operation if the normal 230 V AC mains supply fails.

Where automatic close on loss of mains power forms part of the operating sequence, the panel can command the connected openings to close while remaining available for a subsequent fire signal.

Battery selection and standby performance must be confirmed against the connected actuator load, operating sequence and project requirements.

Drive capacity and system selection

The 3 A output capacity must be checked against:

  • the selected actuator models;
  • the rated and starting current of each actuator;
  • the number of connected actuators;
  • simultaneous operation;
  • cable length and voltage drop;
  • the required fire-mode position;
  • natural ventilation controls;
  • external signalling requirements; and
  • the approved cause-and-effect sequence.

Installation and access

The RZN 4503-T uses a separate mounting plate and upper enclosure, supporting accessible installation and termination.

The panel location should provide:

  • suitable structural fixing;
  • a dedicated 230 V AC supply;
  • clear actuator and control-cable routes;
  • access for testing and commissioning;
  • access for battery replacement; and
  • future maintenance access.

System coordination

The panel is selected and configured together with the automated openings, actuator loads, field cabling, fire interfaces, natural ventilation controls, standby power and approved cause-and-effect sequence.

EBSA works with the project team to coordinate these elements with the fire strategy and relevant design requirements.
